TESL Certificate Requirements: Fall-2006 or Earlier

If your first TESL Certificate class was completed before Fall-2006 (but no earlier than seven years before this current quarter) you may choose to fulfill your TESL Certificate requirements using either the pre-Fall-2006 program rules or the current program rules.  You may not pick and choose among them.

If you are eligible to choose a pre-Fall-2006 program option, please see your adviser to select appropriate courses.

Linguistics and Applied Linguistics        

 

Ling 390:  Introduction to Linguistics

4 credits

 

Ling 438:  Second Language Acquisition

4 credits

 

Ling 492:  Structure of English

4 credits

 

Linguistics electives (upper division)     

12 credits

 

Literature and Cultural Studies (at least 3 credits in each area)

8 credits

 

TESOL Methods and supervised practice

8 credits

TOTAL TESL Certificate Credits:

40 credits

Additional TESL Certificate Requirements:

 

 

2 years of study of a foreign language

 

 

All courses must be graded C or above.

 

pre-Fall-2006 TESL Certificate: Literature and Cultural Studies Requirement

Choose any one English literature course that is:

 

300 level or higher

 

 

relevant to the ESL/EFL context

 

Rationale:

 

The literature requirement is intended to provide TESL Certificate students with ESL/EFL reading materials from which to draw as they are teaching their courses.  Working teachers are often asked to choose reading materials for their courses.
