Position available: Graduate Administrative Assistant:

Department of Applied Linguistics and IELP

(for winter 08, spring 08, and possibly for the 08/09 academic year)


The GAA provides administrative support to the Department of Applied Linguistics and works on assigned projects for the Intensive English Learning program (IELP).   

 The Duties for this position are as follows:

COORDINATION:

  • Coordinates pre-registration, placement testing and registration for our IELP students
  • Assists with the welcome meeting and new student orientation
  • Ensures accurate fees assessment for our international students

 ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • Processes IELP applications
  • Helps maintain the student database in Access
  • Runs class lists for teachers
  • Generates student enrollment reports
  • Assists with problem-solving
  • Keeps information on handouts and materials posted on bulletin board current

 RECEPTIONIST:

  • Answers a multi-line phone
  • Clarifies complicated program registration procedures to prospective IELP students
  • Responds to general information requests received by phone, email, or in person
  • Makes appointments for academic advising
  • Assists with questions regarding the Applied Linguistics programs
  • Updates faculty office hours list, phone list and mail boxes each term
  • Distributes incoming mail

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in the English language, bi-/tri-lingual in languages desired
  • Currently enrolled in at least 9 graduate credits
  • Cross-cultural experience desired
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (patience with limited-English speakers is necessary)
  • Knowledge  of MS office applications
  • Some office experience preferred

 
This position comes with a tuition waiver to cover the cost of 9 graduate credits (must be part of the required classes for a graduate degree) and a stipend of about $750 per month for the equivalent of 20 hours per week.

Position available: Methods/Assessment Faculty 

Position Description:

The Department of Applied Linguistics at Portland State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. 

Applicants should have:

  • a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Education, or a closely related field
  • with primary specializations in language pedagogy and language testing/assessment, and 
  • secondary specializations in culture learning, research design, second language acquisition, or language planning and policy. 
  • Other desirable interests include computer assisted language learning, curriculum design or critical applied linguistics. 

Responsibilities include:

  • teaching two courses per term (three terms per year), 
  • supervision of thesis and M.A. project research, both quantitative & qualitative, and
  • graduate and undergraduate advising
Important to have:
  • An active research agenda, establishing and sustaining funded research activities, and 
  • ESL/EFL teaching experience.

The position will begin duties in Fall 2008.

The Department of Applied Linguistics offers an undergraduate minor, a BA in Applied Linguistics, a Certificate in TESL, a MA:TESOL degree, and houses the Intensive English Learning Program (IELP).
