Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Students, who apply to the MA-TESOL program (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) can also apply for Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Please see the  TA application and evaluation form

Please submit both forms, fill out the GRA/TA application form and have at least two evaluations filled out by your referees. The application deadline is always February 1

Important: the Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant positions use the same application form and personal evaluation forms.


The James R. Nattinger Graduate Teaching Fellowship

The James R. Nattinger Scholarship Fund is established through the Portland State University Foundation to provide scholarship support for outstanding graduate students in the Department of Applied Linguistics. 

This Scholarship Fund has allowed us to create a graduate teaching fellowship position in Professor Nattinger's name.

Adult ESOL Lab School: Graduate Research Assistantships

The number of graduate research assistantships that will be available is contingent upon future funding.   Applications will be accepted once funding levels have been determined.  Watch this space for additional information.

The department has multiple graduate research assistantship positions working within the adult ESOL Lab School.  These are available for multiple years and are re-filled as graduate research assistants graduate. 

  • The positions = 0.30 FTE for 12 months per year. 
  • Fall, Winter and Spring quarters include tuition waivers plus stipends, summer months include stipends only.  

The Adult ESOL Lab School conducts research w/ adult second language learners.

Qualifications

The positions involve analysis, transcription, coding and filming of ESL classes, opportunities to participate in research projects, work w/ a team of Linguistics faculty and ESL teachers. 

A background in and experience w/ English as a second language and/or second language acquisition will be helpful.
