LING 478/578: TESOL Methods II
This course is the second in a two-quarter sequence, which uses the observation and practice teaching
components and work requirements as its focus. The class readings, activities, and assignments are
designed to assist you in exploring the theoretical and practical issues related to the teaching of English as a
second language in a variety of contexts, with various kinds of students. The topics we will focus on are:
the relationship between teaching philosophy, curriculum, syllabus, and lesson; media and materials; lesson
planning; teacher self-reflection and peer observation; integrating language skills; providing opportunities
for interaction; and special teaching topics such as literacy and grammar.

By the end of this course, it is expected that you will:
• feel confident about your ability to teach ESL in a context of your choice;
• be able to observe and provide useful feedback on the teaching of your peers;
• incorporate self reflection into your teaching process;
• develop a productive understanding of the links between theory and practice;
• begin to establish a professional network for discussing issues related to teaching;
• have the necessary materials for completing your TESOL portfolio;
• continue (from Methods I) to develop a sense of identity within the PSU Applied Linguistics
community;
• refine your philosophy of teaching and sense of professional identity.
