Course Description

LING 477/577: TESOL Methods I
This course is the first in a two-quarter sequence which, in combination with a practice teaching
component, is designed to provide the basis for a career (or a variety of careers) in language education.
The course content introduces current knowledge concerning language teaching methodology and second
language learner characteristics.

The focus is on the teaching of English to speakers of other languages
(TESOL), but much of the theory will relate to second and foreign language teaching in general. Although
the core material is theoretical, it will always be related to the practice of language teaching, and there will
be units that focus on the teaching of specific language skills (speaking and listening). This will prepare
you for the second course in the sequence (478/578), where you will engage with a focused study of
specific teaching skills and pursue practice teaching with a learner population of your choice.
