LING 417/517: Maintenance and Revitalization of Endangered Languages

Course Description

There has never been a time when we have more urgently needed language enthusiasts to get involved and help save our precious languages from extinction.  What is causing us to lose them? What can we do for them?

You will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of endangered language revitalization, with a particular focus on languages of the Northwest.  We will look at the many facets of this vital work, including linguistics, cultural/political implications of community languages and their language development.

Major Assignments

Project Paper (30%):  Students are to choose one project topic and write a 10-15 page paper. Guideline: TBA
