Do applied linguistics, work for positive change, and get credit! LING
410/510 "Community Activism" is a hands-on, learn-by-doing class that
focuses on building community and exploring how linguistically and
culturally under-represented groups can work to get their voices heard
in the dominant culture's system. Students have opportunities to bridge
theory with practical real-world experience by working on fun,
authentic, and relevant projects at Atkinson Elementary School in SE
Portland.
This year we will be working on 2 projects.
- We are partnering with
Atkinson's Outdoor Learning Gardens committee, language teachers, and
artist Diane Jacobs on a project integrating language, art, and the
environment. This project involves the use of clay, tile mosaics, and
mural painting for 2nd / heritage language & culture learning
specifically regarding the environment.
- We will be working with the
school's Chinese and Vietnamese families to assist in logistics
regarding Atkinson's Lunar New Year celebration. This project also
involves outreach to the Spanish and English speaking families in the
community.
Here is a great opportunity to use applied linguistics to "be the change
you wish to see in the world." Note: you do not have to be an artist,
musician, or speak Chinese, Vietnamese, or Spanish in order to make
contributions to the class and to Atkinson. A truth that becomes very
apparent during the quarter is that every person has talents that can be
used to make an important difference. If you are an artist, a gardener,
or speak one of the languages listed, this course will provide many
opportunities for you to put those skills to practical use. Students
will have opportunities to work outside of the classroom; times are
flexible and can be arranged to fit individual students' schedules.
This course counts towards a "Language and Society" requirement.
