Admission and Residency Requirements


Admissions Deadlines

The Department of Applied Linguistics has a rolling admissions policy for TESL-Certificate.

  • Applications are accepted from PSU-admitted students.

  • There is no application deadline.

Before completing the TESL Certificate program application, please consult your academic adviser, or make an appointment to meet with an advisor. Advising appointments for prospective students are available by phone or in person.

Admission Requirements

1. Completed Admission to Portland State University

2. Non-native speakers of English must show a minimum English proficiency score of:

  • TOEFL-iBT score = 80

  • TOEFL-PBT score = 550

  • IELTS = 7.0

International Students who hold a previous degree from an English-medium institution do not need to show an English test score.

Before enrolling:

Students interested in applying for the TESL-Certificate program must receive approval from an Applied Linguistics advisor.

 

Residency Requirements

Thirty of the forty credits required to fulfill the TESL Certificate must be completed at Portland State University,

  • unless the residency requirement has already been met as a PSU undergraduate.
